The logistics sector is undergoing a transformation, imposed both by regulations such as the European Green Pact and by increased societal expectations. Parallel to these changes, modern vocational training is facing serious challenges in the effective transfer of knowledge and the formation of practical skills in sustainable logistics among new generations of professionals.
A survey of Bulgarian professional logistics trainers, conducted by the Bulgarian Logistics Association within the framework of the ongoing ECOmile project, reveals a significant problem in the educational process: traditional teaching methods are proving ineffective in attracting the attention and motivation of students and young professionals.
Gamification as an innovative solution
Gamification is an innovative response to the identified challenges. Its essence lies in the application of game mechanics and principles in non-game contexts, which transforms learning into an interactive, challenging and fun experience.
This approach offers multiple benefits to the educational process. It increases the level of learner engagement enhances interest in sustainable logistics and improves understanding of complex concepts. At the same time, it facilitates the development of practical decision-making skills and increases intrinsic motivation to learn.

Effective gamification
Effective gamification requires several essential elements. It starts with building a compelling narrative structure that contextualizes the logistical challenges. A central element is dynamic challenges that simulate real-world scenarios of varying complexity.
Another key aspect is the immediate feedback system that evaluates the decisions made and their impact, as well as the rewards that celebrate achievement and encourage learners to keep learning. Throughout the game, the logistical scenarios become progressively more complex, which maintains a constant interest and motivation among learners.
Project ECOmile: the future of logistics training
In response to these challenges, ECOmile is establishing itself as a leading innovative initiative. Its aim is to develop Serious Game, an educational tool that simulates real logistical challenges and demonstrates the principles of a sustainable last mile. By transforming complex concepts into an interactive and accessible experience, it will bridge the engagement gap in sustainable logistics training.
